Coin History and Design
American Silver Eagle coins were first produced in 1986 and were struck at the San Francisco Mint. The production of these coins moved to the Philidelphia Mint in 1993, and then to the West Point Mint in 2001. Silver Eagle coins were regularly struck between 1986 and 2008, but their production took a one-year break. In 2010, the production of the coin resumed, and the American Silver Eagle coin is still struck to this day. The obverse side of the coin was taken from Adolph A. Weinman's "Walking Liberty," which he designed in 1916. The design features a walking Lady Liberty holding branches over her shoulder and the sun on the eastern horizon. The reverse side of the coin was designed by the American engraver and sculptor, John Mercanti. His design depicts a heraldic-style eagle with a shield and thirteen stars, which represents the 13 founding states. The eagle also holds an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other.
Mintage and Coin Value
The 2005-W American Silver Eagle Proof bears a face value of $1. However, this is not representative of its intrinsic value, which is much higher. The 2005 Silver Eagle value depends on its condition. Coins in perfect grade condition, like this specimen, are worth upwards of $100. The total mintage of 2005 American Silver Eagle coins is over 9.7 million coins, broken down into 8.8 million bullion specimens and 816,000 proof specimens.
