2000 American Silver Eagle Proof

The 2000 American Silver Eagle Proof is one of the rarest coins on the market and is highly sort after by collectors and investors. It is not common to find silver eagles for sale that have been graded as PF70 and are in perfect condition.

History of the Silver Eagle Proof

The American Silver Eagle was originally commissioned in 1986 and has been the official bullion of the United States ever since. The 2000 silver eagle is of particular significance as it was minted at the turn of a new millennium and marked an important moment in the history of the world. The turmoil that surrounded Y2K caused many people to purchase silver eagles as precious metals have long been considered a safe option for assets in times of turmoil. 2000 was the last year that the proofs and silver eagles were minted in Philadelphia as production moved to the West Point Mint in 2001.

Design of the Silver Eagle Coins

Each 2000 American Silver Eagle weighs one Troy ounce, has a reeded edge, is 2.98mm thick, and a diameter of 40.6mm. The proofs are struck from 0.999% silver and have a distinct mirror finish. The obverse features the design of Lady Liberty from the Walking Liberty half dollar. This design was created by Adolph Weinman and is one of the most iconic coin designs in American history. The reverse is a modernized version of the Heraldic Eagle designed by John Mercanti.

Mintage and Silver Eagle Prices

A PF70 grade 2000 Silver Eagle is generally valued at around the $400 mark but some examples have sold for much more at auction. 600,000 proofs were minted in the year 2000 and only around 3,000 have been graded as PF70 by NGC.
