1998-P American Silver Eagle Proof

The 1998-P American Silver Eagle coin was minted in reasonably large numbers compared to in previous years. This was due to an increased demand for the coin from silver investors and coin collectors. In fact, 1998 was the first year in a four-year run, where interest in both the Proof and Bullion coins increased annually. This led to the coin being minted in greater numbers between 1998 and 2001. In 1998, a total of 450,728 proof coins were minted at the Philadelphia mint to meet demand due to volatility in the silver market.

1998 Silver Eagle

1998 is a key date in the silver eagle’s history as, before this year, most proof coins were minted in San Francisco. In 1998 production of the proof coins were at the Philadelphia mint. The 1998-P silver eagle has a ‘P’ mintmark on its reverse beside the eagle’s leg to indicate where it was minted.

American silver eagle history

The American Silver Eagle has become one of the most sought after rare coins on the market today. Its history goes back to 1916 when Adolph Weinman created the image of the walking liberty for the half dollar coin. In 1985 it was decided to use the iconic design that features a full-length walking Liberty on the Silver Eagle series. The coins reverse features an eagle and shield and was designed by John Mercanti.
