American silver eagle coins history
The 1996 Silver Eagle proof was struck at the Philadelphia mint. As it was the anniversary year, demand for the coin was high, and 498,293 coins were produced. This means that the coin isn’t as rare or valuable as some other years, but it’s still a coin that collectors want to get their hands on. The US Mint celebrated the American eagle's tenth anniversary by creating a selection of coins for collectors and investors. As well as proofs, gold and silver commemorative coins were struck for the occasion.
Silver eagle coins design
American Silver Eagle coins contain one troy ounce of silver. They have a diameter of 1.598 inches, and reeded edges have been used in the design. The Walking Liberty half dollar design is used on the obverse of the coin. Adolph A. Weinman designed this coin face in 1916. It depicts Liberty was a flag-draped across her body and carrying branches of olive, laurel, and oak. This image has powerful symbolism and represents peace, freedom, and independence. The coin's reverse side was designed by John Mercanti and has a dynamic image of an eagle and shield. The eagle is holding arrows and branches in its talons. Thirteen stars are also included in the design to represent America's founding states.
