The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was the first time that U.S. coinage featured a female historical figure, rather than a fictional depiction of Lady Liberty. Susan B. Anthony, a critical figure in the women's suffrage movement, was the perfect choice for this landmark coin. The coin was minted from 1979-1981, and again in 1999. The Susan B Anthony coin was discontinued due to its lack of popularity. It was too similar in size to the quarter, and it caused much confusion with the public, and required costly adjustments to be made to coin-operated machines like vending machines.
The coin's obverse features a portrait of Susan B. Anthony at age 50 by Frank Gasparro. The reverse uses the same Apollo 11 Moon Landing-inspired design from the discontinued Eisenhower dollar: an eagle holding a laurel branch on the moon, with Earth in the distant background. Late in the first year of issue, the Susan B Anthony coin was modified to make the rim wider. The initial mintage uses the "Narrow" rim, and can be noted by the larger distance between the bottom of the date and the coin's border. The "Wide" rim variety made the border thicker, and there is a much smaller gap between the date and the border. The "wide" variety was used until the coin was discontinued. However, because the change was made many months into the year, the "wide" variety of the 1979 Susan B Anthony Coin is much more scarce than the "narrow" variety.
