A coin's design doesn't change very often, but when it does, the engravers occasionally tweak the design after release to further refine or adjust it. This famously happened with the 1909 VDB cent, but did you know the design of the 1976 Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar also changed mid-production?

Struck in 1975 in anticipation for America's 200th birthday, every coin denomination that year received a special commemorative design along with a dual date of 1776-1976. The 1976 Eisenhower Dollar was minted with the Liberty Bell superimposed over the Moon for its special commemorative design. The 1976 Eisenhower Dollar was originally minted with bold, block lettering on that special reverse design, but only a few months into production the lettering was adjusted to become slimmer and more refined. These variations are now known as Type 1 and Type 2 respectively.

Due to its short run, the original Type 1 design is harder to find especially in high grades. Just over 4 million were struck before the lettering was adjusted, whereas the Type 2 saw over 113 million coins minted before the bicentennial design was discontinued. The Type 1 has just 3.5% of the Type 2's overall mintage! The 1976 Type 1 Eisenhower Dollar is a fantastic rarity that most collectors don't even know about. We have assembled a set of both Type 1 and Type 2 1976 Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollars in AU/BU condition, so you can compare the reverses of both types side-by-side.
