Explore a unique piece of American coinage history with this 1959 Type 2 Franklin Half Dollar! This isn't your typical Franklin Half, but one with the Type 2 reverse, a design initially intended exclusively for Proof coins. In 1956, the U.S. Mint, in its efforts to perfect the eagle design on the Franklin Half Dollar, introduced a new reverse for Proof coins. This Type 2 reverse features three feathers on the left side of the eagle's wing, where the earlier Type 1 had four, and by sharpening the details of the eagle's neck and chest.
The public preferred the adjusted proof reverse design with the more accurate eagle. However, the U.S. Mint never officially released business strike Franklin Halves with this Type 2 reverse. That makes this 1959 example a fascinating and highly sought-after anomaly for error coin collectors and fans of the Franklin Half Dollar series! Add this unusual piece of American coinage history to your collection today!
