1951 Jefferson Nickel
The 1951 Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 28.5 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. While this was a smaller mintage than some of the previous years at the mintage that sometimes saw over 200 million coins struck, it is still a fairly plentiful mintage. As with many other coins around this same time period, the value of the 1950 Jefferson Nickel has a wide range, from less than a thousand dollars to over sixteen thousand dollars, which is quite a gap. This coin is possible to find all the way up to Mint State 67 and Full Step 67, and will command a premium for the latter.
History of the 1951 Thomas Jefferson Nickel
Due to the wide range and quality of coins available for the 1951 Jefferson Nickel, it’s a good idea to search carefully for that ideal coin that is a perfect blend of beauty, detailing, and value for the price. Felix Schlag won a design contest for the Jefferson Nickel, and his original designs were featured on this coin. The obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson, while his Monticello home can be located on the reverse. This coin does not feature the P mint mark, as only the war nickels within the series did. The Jefferson Nickel is still in production today, although the designs have changed somewhat over the years.

The 1951 Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around $800 for an MS67 Mint State coin to upwards of over $16,000 for a Full Step 67 version. This is a wide price gap depending on what the collector seeks and what is available. It’s possible to build an affordable Jefferson Nickel series collection.
