The 1948-D Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 44.7 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. The 1948-D Thomas Jefferson Nickel is a common coin that is easy to locate in most circulated and Mint State grades up to about Mint State 66, which is great news for collectors looking for a higher grade coin that is still affordable. This coin becomes scarce in Mint State 67, especially the Full Step version where only a few are believed to exist in the highest grades with this designation.

History of the 1948-D Jefferson Nickel

Cherrypicking is advised when choosing your ideal 1948-D Jefferson Nickel. This is a relatively affordable coin even in the higher Mint State and Full Step grades and would make a great entry coin to start filling out this large series. The obverse of the coin features the left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson, while the reverse showcases his Monticello home. The ‘D’ mint mark can be found on the reverse to the side of the Monticello. Felix Schlag was the original designer of the Jefferson Nickel, although the designs have changed over the years. The Jefferson Nickel is still in production to this day.
