1947 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

1947 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty silver half dollar issue came to an end in 1947. The popular coin design replaced the short-lived Franklin silver half dollar design. The imagery and symbolism of the coin makes it popular with collectors and non-collectors alike. Everyone finds beauty in Lady Liberty wrapped in the flag and a rising sun. The beloved design was recycled in 1986 for the one ounce American Eagle silver bullion coin. The popular design was created by Alexander Weinman who won a competition sponsored by the Commission on Fine Arts. His prize was the commission to design this coin and the dime. This wasn’t his first design and his other designs were turned down before this design gained approval. As a Philadelphia issued coin, it is well struck. Good condition coins retain their frosty luster.
