1946 Washington Quarter

1946 Washington Quarter

The 1946 Washington Quarter had a total mintage of just over 53.4 million coins from the Philadelphia Mint which was slightly more than the previous year. Out of the coins produced in the 1940s, the 1946 Washington Quarter is one of the harder ones to find in the highest uncirculated grades. Finding an attractive 1946 Washington Quarter is possible with a little effort, and would make a great addition to a silver Washington Quarter series collection.

History of the 1946 Washington Quarter

The 1946 Washington Quarter has a relatively higher mintage than some of the other coins in the series. During the 1950s and 1960s, coins with a lower mintage were more desirable and sought after which resulted in those coins being saved in uncirculated rolls. The 1946 Washington Quarter had a higher mintage that meant that many of these coins weren’t saved and ended up in circulation. This makes them harder to find in higher Mint States grades. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flannagan in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of first United States President, George Washington’s birthday.
