1946-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar

1946-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty silver half dollar design replaced the Franklin silver half dollar. Collectors and non-collectors appreciate the imagery and symbolism of the coin. Lady Liberty is wrapped in a flag with her arm gracefully outstretched. This design was so popular that it was re-used in 1986 for the one ounce American Eagle silver bullion coin. The enduring and beloved design is the work of Alexander Weinman, a German-American sculptor. He was commissioned to design this coin and the dime when he won a competition sponsored by the Commission on Fine Arts. This wasn’t the initial design for the coin and his previous designs were turned down before this final design earned approval. For a coin coming from the San Francisco mint, it is well struck. Gem grade coins exhibit a white and frosty luster.
