History and Description
The 1945-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar features a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. It has a reeded edge and weighs 12.50g. Its diameter measures 30.00mm. Designed by the noted sculptor and engraver Adolphe A. Weinman, Liberty Half Dollars feature an obverse side that depicts a full-length view of Lady Liberty striding toward the sunlit horizon. She is carrying sprigs of laurel and oak, which are symbolic of American glory. The word Liberty appears at the top of the coin and its date appears at its bottom edge.
The reverse side of the 1945-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar features a bald eagle with unfurled wings set atop its mountain perch. A mountain pine sapling appears at the edge of the eagle’s perch which is emblematic of America.
The U.S. Mint replaced the Walking Liberty Half Dollar with the Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar coin in 1948. The Franklin Half Dollar coin was designed by chief mint engraver John R. Sinnock.
