1944 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
The 1944 Walking Liberty half dollar was issued by the Philadelphia mint. Most coins coming from this mint are exceptionally well struck, with this coin being the exception. The strike can be soft and mushy with the 1944 Walking Liberty. However, the strike problem doesn’t rise to the level of S-mint half dollars. Coin collectors consider the Walking Liberty to be one of the most handsome circulating coins ever minted. The beloved design was created by the sculptor Adolph Weinman. The Commission on Fine Arts held a competition with the prize being a commission to design the half dollar and dime. This was not the original design for the coin. The 1944 Walking Liberty usually has a frosty white luster.
1944 Walking Liberty Half Dollar Value, Scarcity, and Key Dates
The 1944 Walking Liberty silver half dollar value begins at $9 for a low-grade coin in circulated condition and can be as much as $35 for a higher-grade uncirculated coin. It is scarcer in mint condition than the other Philadelphia Walking Liberty coins such as the 1941 through the 1943 and the 1945 Walking Liberty silver half dollar coins. Still it represents 63% of all Walking Liberty coins minted this year. A coin in poor condition is worth more to a collector of the Walking Liberty half dollar than a collector of silver as the coin value exceeds the silver value. Walking Liberty half dollar key dates exclude this Philadelphia coin.
