1943-D Jefferson Nickel

The 1943-D Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 15 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. It featured the enlarged ‘D’ mint mark on the reverse of the coin above the dome on Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello home. This coin is one of the most common found in the “War” nickels between 1942 and 1945. These coins had a slightly different composition because Nickel was needed by the military so silver was used instead. The 1943-D Thomas Jefferson Nickel is one of the few that has a higher population of Full Step versions compared to non-Full Step versions in higher grades.

While this is a smaller mintage than many of the others in the series, it’s a very common coin in the highest Mint State grades. Cherrypicking is possible with this coin and also advised to ensure you find the best coin for its value. Felix Schlag was the designer of the Jefferson Nickel and he won the coveted role by winning a design contest for the coin. The obverse features the left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson and the reverse showcases Jefferson’s Monticello home. The Jefferson Nickel is still in production today and the designs continue to shift over the years.
