1937-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar

1937-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The 1937-S Walking Liberty half dollar design was the work of Adolph Weinman. Mr. Weinman was the winner of a Commission of Fine Arts contest to award the commission for design of this coin and as well as the dime. This wasn't the first design for this coin and a number of his designs were rejected before this one gained final approval. Like other Walking Liberty half dollar coins that came out of  the San Francisco mint, the coin carries an “S” mint mark on the back. For a coin coming from the San Francisco mint where strike was often a problem, it is well struck and has a cool, frosty white luster.

1937-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar Value, Scarcity, and Key Dates

The 1937-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar value begins at $9 for one of the low-grade circulated specimens to around $165 for higher grade uncirculated specimens. This Walking Liberty half dollar is scarce in mint condition and Gem grades, but specimens are available.  This is the second most common of the S mints issued in the 1930’s.  Even though this coin was released during the Great Depression, collectors saved many rolls of coins and only the 1939-S mint half dollar is still more available in the 1930 series. For a coin in poor condition, the value of the silver content and the value of the coin are almost equal. Both values remain higher than the face value of the coin. This coin is not one of the Walking Liberty half dollar key dates.
