The Peace Dollar was designed by Anthony di Francisci, after winning a contest held by the U.S. Mint to find a design for the silver dollar that was to replace the Morgan Dollar and celebrate the end of World War I. Di Francisci's winning design features a stunning Lady Liberty on the obverse and a striking bald eagle on the reverse clutching an olive branch, the ultimate symbol of peace. Struck with 90% silver, the Peace Dollar was the last silver dollar ever struck for circulation in the United States.
This 1928-S Peace Dollar was the final Peace Dollar struck before the series' hiatus until 1934. This piece had a low mintage of just 1,632,000 coins minted, which is low for the overall series, but is not as low as the 1928-P Peace Dollar, which was limited to a miniscule 360,649 pieces. Since no Peace Dollars were minted in Denver in 1928, this 1928-S Peace Dollar is the ONLY affordable Peace Dollar from the final year before the hiatus. The 1928-P's tiny mintage makes it triple the price of this 1928-S Peace Dollar. This incredible piece is in Almost Uncirculated-Brilliant Uncirculated (AU/BU) condition, which is amazing for a coin that is nearly 100 years old. This 1928-S Peace Dollar is an affordable way to collect this brilliant key date in the Peace Dollar series without having to break the bank today!
