1928-S Mercury Dime
The 1928-S Mercury Dime had a total mintage of 7.4 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. This was a relatively larger mintage for San Francisco compared to recent years, but still a relatively small mintage. This coin can be found in most circulated and many Mint State grades up to about MS65 and can be found around MS67+ in the Full Band varieties. This is a valuable coin that increases in value even more so due to the “S” mint mark on the bottom of the reverse of the coin.
History of the 1928-S Mercury Dime
When looking for your ideal 1928-S Mercury Dime, seek out one that is sharply struck, has a nice luster, and attractive surfaces. It’s possible to find more affordable coins by purchasing circulated and lower Mint State coins that offer a lot of value. The Mercury Dime was designed by Adolph A. Weinman who also happened to design the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The reverse of the coin features an image called a fasces that is surrounded by an ax and an olive branch. The obverse of the coin depicts a younger Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap that symbolizes “liberty of thought.”
