1927-S Mercury Dime

1927-S Mercury Dime

The 1927-S Mercury Dime had a total mintage of just over 4.7 million coins. This coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint and features the ‘S’ mint mark on the bottom of the reverse of the coin. This was a larger mintage than the previous year, but commands just as high, or higher, a price tag for the highest grades found in Mint State and Full Band. Considering the mintage of the series, this has a smaller than average mintage.

History of the 1927-S Mercury Dime

The 1927-S Mercury Dime is worth the effort to find well-struck. Coins struck at the San Francisco Mint were often more sought after compared to some of the other mints, especially within this series. The Mercury Dime was designed by Adolph A. Weinman, who also designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. This coin features the ‘S’ mint mark found on the bottom of the reverse of the coin. The reverse also features a fasces wrapped in an olive branch. The obverse depicts a younger version of Lady Liberty with a winged cap on her head that symbolizes “liberty of thought.”

1927-S Mercury Dime Value

The 1927-S Mercury Dime value ranges between $4,600 and $63,000 for the highest grades of the coin in Mint State and in the Full Band versions. This is a valuable coin that can be found with a sharp strike and a nice luster. The 1927-S Mercury Dime is often valued because of being struck at the San Francisco Mint and due to its small mintage. This coin would make a valuable addition to any Mercury Dime series collection.
