1924-S Peace Dollar
Only a handful of the 1924-S Peace Silver Dollars were minted at San Francisco compared to the 1923-S. With less than 2 million struck, it is still relatively easy to find in circulated grades and lower MS grades. However, due to the poor work of the San Francisco Mint in the 1920s, it is extremely rare to find the 1924-S in higher grades. A large quantity to the 1924-S were poorly struck, lackluster and with heavily abraded surfaces. A light strike on the reverse is common and many coins heavily feature bag marks making the gems all the more rare.
History of the 1924-S Peace Dollar
The mintage of the 1924-S Peace Dollar was a tiny fraction of the 1922-S and 1923-S. Peace silver dollars had almost become redundant as so many sat in bank vaults across the US. There were no 1924 Peace silver dollars minted in Denver at all. Due to the low mintage of the 1924-S, it’s relatively hard to tell when the coins were released into the market.
It’s believed that many of the bags were slowly released in the 1940s under the nose of many investors. However, in the late 1950s, some of the 1000 coin bags were made available and quickly snapped up at double the face value. This was an unusually high amount at the time, owing to the rarity of the uncirculated 1924-S.
1924-S Peace Dollar Value
Lower grades of the 1924-S Peace Dollar are relatively cheap, and yet still much more expensive than its Philadelphia mint marked counterpart. The 1924-S Peace silver dollar value can reach into the tens of thousands. This coin is one of the rarest S-mint coins up to this point in time in the Peace Dollar series.
