1923-S Wheat Penny
The 1923-S Wheat Penny has a smaller mintage compared to others in the series with just 8.7 million from the San Francisco Mint. This is a valuable coin that is rare in Full Red condition and can command a higher price tag for any of the Mint State coins. It’s relatively easy to find the 1923-S Wheat Penny in circulated grades, as well as Mint State. This would make a great addition to any Wheat Penny series collection.
History of the 1923-S Wheat Penny
The 1923-S Wheat Penny is a prized coin in the Wheat Penny series, and it can be difficult to find one with a sharp strike. Finding a fully struck coin can be a challenge, and is worth the effort to find a well-struck coin that is as red as possible with as little carbon spots as possible. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the S mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.
1923-S Wheat Penny Worth
The 1923-S Wheat Penny value ranges from around $3,000 to upwards of $67,000 for the higher grade Mint State coins available in brown and red varieties. Cherrypicking is advised since this coin is notorious for not having a full strike, but it is possible to find some beautiful examples to add to your collection.
