The 1920-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar was struck by the San Francisco mint in 1920. Like all Walking Liberty silver half dollar coins issued in San Francisco, it carries the distinctive “S” mint mark under the words “In God We Trust”. Adolph Weinman designed this coin and the dime. The commission was granted when he won a competition held by the Commission of Fine Arts. This was not the initial design and other designs were rejected before this design was approved. The luster is soft and frosty or may have golden toning. As with many of the coins in this series coming from San Francisco, strike is problematic. Poor detailing in Liberty’s left hand is common.
1920-S Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar Value and Scarcity
The 1920-S Walking Liberty half dollar value carries a lesser value in the low grades as this coin is easily found. In mint state the 1920-S Walking Liberty silver half dollar is a rare coin. In choice condition it is not as rare as the 1921-S and 1919-D coins in the series. The 1920-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar can range from $18 in lower circulated grade to upwards of $1,200 in higher uncirculated grades
Most of the Gem grade coins available were acquired by Jim Halperin in the 1970’s when he purchased two rolls of the 1920-S Walking Liberty half dollars from private collector James Bennett Pryor.
The rarity of this coin in good condition makes this year a key date.
