1919-D Wheat Penny
The 1919-D Wheat Penny has a larger mintage of over 57 million from the Denver Mint. This coin is a semi-key date in the series, as the early teens and twenties from both Denver and San Francisco are somewhat harder to come by. That being said, the 1919-D Wheat Penny is a more common date early on in the series, but becomes very scarce the higher the grades.
History of the 1919-D Wheat Penny
The 1919-D Wheat Penny is a valuable coin to add to any Wheat Penny series collection, and cherrypicking is advised, especially with the Denver Mint that is sometimes known to produce a weaker strike on their Wheat Pennies. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the D mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.
1919-D Wheat Penny Worth
The 1919-D Wheat Penny value ranges from less than $500 for the highest grade brown varieties of this coin, and can reach upwards of $30,000 for the red variety. This is a more affordable coin in the series, even for the serious collector. The 1919-D Wheat Penny would make a valuable addition to complete a Wheat Penny series collection.
