1919-D Walkinjg Liberty Half Dollar

The 1919-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a rare collectible coin struck in Denver in 1919. It is an extremely rare coin in all grades, much like the other coins in this series struck that year. Adolph Weinman won a Commission of Fine Arts competition and was then commissioned to design the silver half dollar and dime. This was not his first design as his other prior designs were rejected. Luster is a problem and even mint state coins show toning. Strike quality was an issue with this coin as most of the 1919-D half dollars were weakly struck.

1919-D Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar Value and Scarcity

The 1919-D Walking Liberty half dollar value is high because it is not easily found. Like the 1919 and 1919-S, the 1919-D Walking Liberty half dollar is rare in all circulated grades. The 1919-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar can range from $56 in lower circulated grade to upwards of $4750 in higher uncirculated grades. It is rare in high grades, extremely rare in mint condition, and above grade 65 it almost doesn’t exist. There are even fewer Superb grade Gems and only a few white frosty Gems are known.

These coins were poorly struck. There is little detail of the hand on the obverse of the coin and on the reverse, there is little detailing of the eagle’s feathers.  This is why so few of the 1919-D Walking Liberty silver half dollars have survived in Gem condition (grade 65-66). They weren’t high quality to start.  This is a key date for the Walking Liberty half dollar.
