1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I)

1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I)

The 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter in the first version of the coin had a total mintage of just under 2 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. This was the first issue of the Standing Liberty Quarter coin from the San Francisco Mint, which makes it valuable with that trait alone. This coin had one of the lower mintages in the series, and it was one of the last to be struck with the naked Lady Liberty version that is so desirable and unique to these earliest Standing Liberty Quarters.

History of the 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I)

The 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter of the first variety is relatively easy to find in circulated grades, although it costs a premium compared to other circulated grades in the series. In Mint State, this coin becomes much more difficult to find, especially in the highest grades. The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty holding a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, with one exposed breast. She stands in some form of gateway that features 13 stars and the words “In God We Trust” dividing the walls. The reverse of the coin features an American Bald Eagle in flight with 13 stars surrounding it.

1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I) Value

The 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I) value ranges from $7,000 to $50,000 for the highest Mint State grades available on the market today. Choose carefully with this coin to ensure a sharp strike and attractive surfaces. It’s possible to find the full head version of this coin as well, where Lady Liberty’s head has the full strike. The 1917-S Standing Liberty Quarter of the first variety would make a valuable addition to any Standing Liberty Quarter series collection.
