1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety II)
The 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter had a second production in the same year with the small adjustment of covering Lady Liberty’s bare breast with some chain mail armor. The second version of the 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter is one of the rarer in the series in circulated grades and is even more difficult to find in Mint State and Gem condition, although not impossible.
History of the 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety II)
The 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter of the second variety is considered a semi-key date due to the rarity of the coin in higher grades, and even the difficulty of finding it in circulated grades. Full Head versions can be difficult to find, and sometimes the strike is an issue, so cherrypicking is advised. Luster is usually frosty and white with various shades of original toning. The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty holding a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other while wearing chain mail armor on her body. She stands in some form of gateway that features 13 stars and the words “In God We Trust” dividing the walls. The reverse of the coin features an American Bald Eagle in flight with 13 stars surrounding it.
1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety II) Value
The 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter of the second variety value ranges from around $12,000 to $71,000. This is a more expensive and more difficult coin to find in the series and definitely adds value to any Standing Liberty Quarter series collection. Looking for one with a sharp strike, and attractive surfaces will add beauty to the collection.
