The 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter of the first variety was the first Standing Liberty Quarter struck at the Denver Mint. This coin can be found in both circulated and uncirculated Mint State grades. History of the 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I)
The 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I) still featured the bare breast of Lady Liberty that had certain interest groups up in arms. The symbolism behind the choice of a semi-naked Liberty was never explained by the Mint or by the designer, and it is popular talk among collectors about the reasons behind the choice. The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty holding a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other, with one exposed breast. She stands in some form of gateway that features 13 stars and the words “In God We Trust” dividing the walls. The reverse of the coin features an American Bald Eagle in flight with 13 stars surrounding it.
