The 1912 Indian Head Gold Coin had a total mintage of 616,000 coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin is viewed as one of the more underrated in the series. It is only less rare than three other coins in the series, but the price point doesn’t match its rarity making this a very valuable coin to get a hold of. It can be found fairly easily in Mint State between MS60 and MS63, and maybe even Mint State 64. Mint State 67 1912 Indian Head Gold Coins have been spotted by experienced collectors, but for the most part, they are believed to be mostly unobtainable.
History of the 1912 Indian Head Gold Coin
The 1912 Indian Head Gold Coin is more sharply struck than the previous year, but is of similar appearance and quality with a slightly less lustrous appearance with surfaces that are somewhat less granular. Beautiful specimens with brilliant light yellow gold coloring exist, but many seem to have more of a greenish orange color. Bela Lyon Pratt was the designer of the Indian Head Quarter Eagle and the obverse features the profile of a Native American in headdress and the reverse features the standing Bald Eagle on a bundle of arrows clutching an olive branch.

The 1912 Indian Head Gold Coin value reaches upwards of around $37,000 for the highest grades of the coin on the market, typically maxing out around Mint State 66. This underrated coin is worth the effort to find in higher grades, and will be quite a hunt to find it due to its rarity. It can be found at a good value because of the seemingly lower prices compared to other coins in the series of equal rarity.
