1912-D V Nickel
The 1912-D V Nickel is a unique and sought after coin within the series. It is the only Liberty Head Nickel that was struck at the Denver Mint and has the popular ‘D’ mint mark on the reverse of the coin. While it is a lower mintage than many in the series, it is still relatively common and easy enough to find in circulated examples and even in Mint State up to about MS64, followed by MS63. It’s possible to find the 1912-D V Nickel in Mint State 66, but it is scarce in that grade.
History of the 1912-D Liberty Head V Nickel
The 1912-D Liberty Head V Nickel is a worthwhile coin to find for this collection. It is unique due to its minting location and also due to the lower mintage. Cherrypicking is advised to find a sharply struck coin with as much detailing as possible. Many of the coins in the series, including this one, suffer from a weaker strike on the details of some of them. It’s possible to find a 1912-D Liberty Head Nickel that is fully struck with original coloring. Charles E. Barber designed the V Nickel with his popular and recognizable liberty head on the obverse. The reverse shows the V Roman numeral at the center with a wreath framing it. Watch for sharp detailing in the ear of corn in the wreath.
1912-D V Nickel Value
The 1912-D Liberty Head “V” Nickel value reaches upwards of $41,000 for the highest grades of the coin available. It can be found at much more affordable prices in circulated grades and lower Mint State grades but will likely command a small premium due to the uniqueness of a Denver minted V Nickel.
