1911 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1911 Indian Head Gold Coin had a total mintage of 704,000 coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. All of the early years were struck here, and the Philadelphia Mint was known for its excellent craftsmanship. This is a scarce coin but isn’t considered rare except in Gem condition. The 1911 Indian Head is a unique coin that differs in appearance from previously struck coins in the series.

History of the 1911 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1911 Indian Head Gold Coin is definitely a coin that requires cherrypicking. Its appearance is different from previously issued coins by way of a less lustrous, more granular, and a color that tends to lean towards a more greenish orange color as opposed to a light to medium gold color, although some can be found in the latter coloring. The strike is also mostly average at best, but some coins can be found sharply struck on both sides of the coin. The Indian Head Gold Coin was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt which features a Native American in headdress on the obverse and a standing bald eagle on the reverse.
