1909 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1909 Indian Head Gold Coin had a total mintage of just over 441,000 coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. It’s possible to find circulated and lower Mint State versions of this coin. The 1909 Indian Quarter Eagle is a scarce coin, but not impossible to find. Beyond Mint State 63, this coin becomes very difficult to find, and it has been found all the way up to about MS66. 

 

History of the 1909 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1909 Indian Head Gold Coin is a beautiful coin that is worth cherrypicking when possible. Superb specimens exist and it is worth the effort to find them. These coins are usually well-struck, and quality can range from a luster that is almost always very good and prooflike to others that are fully frosty. The color ranges from light to medium yellow gold and provides a fun hunting experience to find that ideal coin. Bela Lyon Pratt designed the Indian Head Gold Coin which features a Native American in headdress on the obverse of the coin. He is surrounded by 13 stars to represent the 13 colonies. The reverse shows a standing bald eagle over some arrows and an olive branch held in its talon.

Fully struck and lustrous specimens are a true joy to find, although difficult to locate.
