1908 Indian Head Gold Coin

1908 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1908 Indian Head Gold Coin had a total mintage of around half a million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This was the first issue of the series, and as was common, many were saved by collectors as novelties and souvenirs, making this coin relatively available and possible to find in Mint State. The most common of this coin are MS63 and MS64 coins, in MS65 they are scarce, yet they are one of the most common in Mint State 66 or better conditions.

History of the 1908 Indian Head Gold Coin

The 1908 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is typically a well-struck coin, although the eagle’s wing on the reverse usually has a noticeable lack of detail. This doesn’t impact the grade of the coin because it wasn’t a strike issue, but a lack of detail in the die which was remedied in later years. The 1908 Indian Head Gold Coin usually had a “soft” luster, with a more frosty and sometimes even satiny appearance. Bela Lyon Pratt was the designer of the Indian Head Gold Coin and the obverse features a Native American wearing a headdress with thirteen stars lining the edges around him. The reverse showcases a standing American Bald Eagle standing on a bundle of arrows clutching an olive branch.

The 1908 Indian Head Gold Coin value reaches upwards of $66,000 for Mint State grades above MS64.
