1901-O Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1901-O Morgan Silver Dollar was minted at the New Orleans Mint with over 13 million total coins struck. Many of these coins were stored at the Philadelphia Mint and the Treasury Building in Washington D.C. after the New Orleans Mint ceased operations. The 1901-O Morgan Dollar slowly trickled out coins over the decades, although the 1901-O Morgan Silver Dollar in Mint State was quite a rarity that collectors and investors weren’t aware of.

It wasn’t until the major release and unsealing of the Philadelphia Mint vault happened in 1962 when huge quantities of the 1901-O Morgan Silver Dollar was released. Mint State coins, especially in lower grades, are also fairly common, although they are typically heavily bagmarked and poorly struck. It is believed that millions of the 1901-O Morgan Dollar were melted down at various times.
