1901 Indian Head Penny
In 1901, the US was enjoying a robust economy and demand for the Indian Head Cent was high. American’s had fully embraced the national currency and the one cent coin was being used in new coin operated machines, including penny arcades. At this point, the US Mint had made it illegal to produce the coin at any other mint location besides Philadelphia and annual appropriations for the metals necessary to produce the penny were still at 1859 levels.

While attitudes about American currency and the penny had changed significantly since it was first introduced, the actual design was basically the same. The face of the coin features the profile of Lady Liberty. Notably, she is pictured wearing an Indian Chief headdress, which is meant as a nod to the indigenous people of America. Meanwhile, the reverse side features an oak wreath and shield. All of these symbols were chosen as a way to solidify a sense of national identity for a country that was in its infancy.
