1889-S Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1889-S Morgan Silver Dollar was once considered the rarest Morgan Silver Dollar of the entire series! San Francisco, just like Carson City, tended to have a lower total mintage for the Morgan Dollars they produced. Very few of these coins went into circulation after they were struck, and most went straight into storage at the San Francisco Mint. This could have been the reason for the perceived rarity of the coin. 

 

History of the 1889-S Morgan Silver Dollar

It wasn’t until the late 1930s and early 1940s, that the 1889-S Morgan Silver Dollar was released out onto the market and become more common. Many collectors and investors of the time paid little attention to the coin, and many didn’t know of its history of being considered a rarity. The 1889-S Morgan Dollar is more scarce compared to some of the other San Francisco Mint coins, but it isn’t rare. It can be hard to find these coins in worn grades but is relatively easy to find an 1889-S Morgan Silver Dollar in a Mint State. It is believed that over 100,000 of this low mintage of 700,000 was melted down due to the provisions of the Pittman Act.
