1883 Indian Head Penny

The 1883 Indian Head Penny had a total mintage of over 45.5 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This was a higher mintage and this Indian Head Cent is relatively common. This coin can be found in colorways that range from brown to brown-red to red. It’s possible to find all of these colors in most Mint State grades, with the most common being around MS64, and it being possible to find up to MS67 for some red varieties.

Cherrypicking is advised when seeking out the ideal 1883 Indian Head Penny because this coin is possible to find well-struck. Look for coins with a nice luster, original red or brown coloring, and the fewest carbon spots as possible. Red versions are the most expensive, but it’s possible to find more affordable and gorgeous brown varieties with glossy and smooth surfaces. The obverse of the coin features the profile of a woman in a headdress, while the reverse displays the words ONE CENT at the center with a laurel wreath and shield surrounding it.
