The 1879 Indian Head Cent was still being produced in relatively low numbers. That helps to make it another important date in the series. While it isn’t the most collectible early one cent coin, experts think that there are only a handful still available in the highest certified mint rating.
History of the 1879 Indian Head Penny
The first Indian Head Penny was struck in 1859 and marked an important milestone in American commerce. The US was trying to create its own currency and move away from gold and silver coins that were still in circulation. Making the move towards a truly American currency was an important step towards cutting ties with European roots and reinforcing distinct culture.
For these reasons, the designer, James Barton Longacre, chose specific symbols for the coin that were meant to highlight American history. The face of the 1879 Indian Head Penny features the profile of the goddess Liberty wearing a traditional Indian chief headdress. Over the years, small alterations were made to the hair and the bust, but it would be some time before any major design changes.
The reverse side of the coin has an oak wreath with bunches of six leaves. A shield is placed at the top and the words “one cent” are printed in the middle in all caps.
Value of the 1879 Indian Head Penny
An 1879 Indian Head Penny in average condition is worth around $6. However, a rare mint condition coin is valued at $170.
