The first reverse design '8-Tailfeather' would only be struck for a few weeks before changing to a '7-Tailfeather' reverse. The first of these changes resulted in two new dollars, '7-Tailfeather' and '7/8 Tailfeather', the latter a result of impressions of the master die beneath the seven tailfeathers.
This 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar has the "7TF Reverse of 1878", which means its reverse design features a flat breast on the eagle, less depth to the arrows clutched in the eagle's talons, and 7 tail feathers. This design would later be changed to the "reverse of 1879" which was then seen on the rest of the coins in the Morgan Silver Dollar series.
