Collectors of the Indian Head Penny series know that the 1869 Indian Head Penny is a prized member. While one cent coin production was above 35 million in some years during the Civil War, these numbers dropped drastically after the war. There were just 6.5 million 1868 Indian Head One Cent coins produced, making it one of the rarest in existence. This means that only a small number of these coins still survive since many of them were lost or spent over the years.
The design on both sides of the coin is essentially the same as the original strike from 1859. While there were minor changes over the years, this bronze alloy coin looks much like early versions although it is lighter than the nickel coins that were produced during the Civil War.
While the 1869 Indian Head Penny is regarded as a well struck coin, it is extremely rare to find one in mint condition. As a result, even low-grade versions will garner a high price on the market. The coin comes in red, red brown, and brown colors, but the color doesn’t necessarily affect the pricing.
Value of an 1869 Indian Head Penny
A coin that is in good condition will sell for around $80. An uncirculated penny is worth about $550. Collectors who are looking to complete their Indian Head series are willing to pay more for this rare coin that has one of the lowest mintage totals in American history.
