The classic Indian Head Cent is a favorite amongst American coin collectors, and is an established staple in the world of numismatics. Even after 100+ years, collectors actively seek out the Indian Head Cent to add to their collection. We assembled this duo of 1864 Indian Head Cents so you can own both types of Indian Head Cents minted that year. After the success of private-issued Civil War tokens amongst the public, the U.S. Mint realized they could cut down the costs of producing Indian Head Cents by reducing the amount of copper in the coin, and the public would still be satisfied. So, in 1864 the U.S. Mint switched from a Copper-Nickel composition to Bronze (copper-alloy) along with a smaller form factor. This change only came after a few months into the year, so both types of Indian Head Cent were minted and circulated that year! The discontinued Copper-Nickel 1864 Indian Head Cent had a mintage of just 13,740,000, which is just shy of 1/3 of the Bronze Indian Head Cent's mintage of 39,233,714! Both of these cents were minted during the Civil War, when tensions were high while the war effort was winding down. With this duo of copper cents you can compare and contrast the size, surface, and designs of each coin. Both in circulated condition, this set is an excellent way to collect both American numismatic and Civil War history at an affordable price.
