Product Description
Now this is a fascinating relic of numismatic history you may have never seen before! This coin is a replica of the 1858-O Seated Liberty Half Dollars that were recovered from the S.S. Republic shipwreck. In 1865, the S.S. Republic departed New York for New Orleans carrying gold and silver coins worth nearly $400,000 at the time. But before she could reach her destination, the S.S. Republic sunk to her watery grave 1,700 feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean. The ship and her cargo weren't recovered for nearly 150 years.
These coins were made after the 2003 shipwreck discovery to replicate the Civil War era half dollars, but were struck with a copper core and 41mg of .999 fine silver clad. The coin was then inscribed with "WAR 1861", to highlight the tumultuous time in history that these replicas are commemorating. NGC has certified these coins to be authorized replicas of the S.S. Republic shipwreck, and holdered them with a special label with an engraving of the ship. This is an incredibly unique piece rich with history to add to your collection!
