In the shadow of Munich and under the looming threat of Nazi expansion, Czechoslovakia was the first full victim of Hitler’s policy of Lebensraum. The German occupation began with the 1938 annexation of the Sudetenland, justified by the false promise of protecting ethnic Germans. But in March 1939, Hitler’s Wehrmacht marched into Prague, dismantling the republic and creating the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. By the end of World War II, Nazi forces had extended their grip over the entire territory.

This rare billfold contains three genuine wartime banknotes that circulated during the Nazi occupation:

  • Two Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia notes, including a scarce 500 korun

  • One 1 Reichsmark military note, issued by the Nazi regime for use in occupied zones

These notes bore witness to a nation under siege—its sovereignty erased, its economy transformed, and its people forced to navigate life under totalitarian rule. These currencies are not just relics; they’re artifacts of betrayal, resilience, and global consequence. After the full occupation of Czechoslovakia, Britain and France finally drew a line in the sand—promising to defend Poland. When Hitler crossed that line, the Second World War began.
