Romania's story is one of survival, resilience, and transformation in the heart of Eastern Europe. Modern Romania was born in 1859, uniting the historic Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. By 1866, the nation had taken on the official name Romania and gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. In World War I, after a brief neutrality, Romania entered on the side of the Allied Powers in 1916. Its reward was significant territorial expansion, incorporating Bukovina, Bessarabia, Transylvania, and portions of Banat, Crișana, and Maramureș into the sovereign Kingdom of Romania.

But history took a darker turn. In 1940, under immense geopolitical pressure, Romania was forced to cede territory to the Soviet Union and Hungary. By late that year, Romania had aligned with the Axis Powers through the Tripartite Pact. The country entered World War II fighting the Soviet Union—only to switch sides in 1944 and join the Allies, helping to reclaim Northern Transylvania. Post-war Romania fell under the occupation of the Soviet Red Army, becoming a socialist republic and part of the Warsaw Pact.

The winds of freedom returned in 1989 with the Romanian Revolution. The country transitioned to democracy and a market economy, shedding its authoritarian past and embracing a new, open identity.

Each note in this collection is a window into Romania’s turbulent yet fascinating modern history. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and includes the following five genuine banknotes:

  3. 1000 lei, P-106, 1998 – Honors national poet Mihai Eminescu.
