2009 Penny Error List

2009 marked both the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth and the centennial of the Lincoln cent itself. Continue reading to learn more about 2009 penny error list.

To celebrate, the U.S. Mint replaced the long-standing Memorial reverse with four one-year designs that trace Lincoln’s life:

Design Theme Release date Mint(s)
Birth & Early Childhood (“Log Cabin”) Kentucky, 1809-1816 Feb 12 2009 P · D · Satin SMS · S-proof
Formative Years (“Rail-Splitter”) Indiana, 1816-1830 May 14 2009 P · D · Satin SMS · S-proof
Professional Life (“Lawyer & Legislator”) Illinois, 1830-1861 Aug 13 2009 P · D · Satin SMS · S-proof
Presidency in Washington D.C., 1861-1865 Nov 12 2009 P · D · Satin SMS · S-proof

Each design required new working hubs and dies—and the frantic pace of striking 2.35 billion cents in just 11 monthscreated perfect conditions for doubled dies, die chips, cracks, off-centre strikes, wrong-planchet hits and other mishaps. Variety specialists now recognise well over 120 distinct doubled-die listings for 2009 alone Doubled Die. Learn how these varieties affect 2009 lincoln wheat penny value.

How to hunt and confirm a 2009‐cent error

      1. Use adequate magnification – a 10× loupe is minimum; a 20-60× USB microscope helps with subtle extra-thumb varieties.

      2. Target areas first:

        • Log ends on the Birthplace reverse.

        • Lincoln’s right hand and book (Formative Years).

        • Third-row windows on the Professional Life reverse.

        • Base of the Capitol dome on the Presidency reverse.

      3. Compare to trusted references – Wexler’s Doubled-Die Files and CONECA’s Variety Vista keep photo archives of every listed variety.

      4. Weigh suspicious coins – wrong-planchet pieces deviate from the 2.50 g zinc standard by more than ±0.15 g.

      5. Grade before you sell – PCGS/NGC certification turns a $20 raw error into $75-$150 once encapsulated, and stabilises thin copper surfaces.

Recent market performance

Even in a soft modern-coin market, premium pieces bring solid money:

      • 2009-D Formative Years MS67RD FS-801 – $480 (Heritage, 2022)

      • 2009-P Presidency DDR MS66RD – $216 (eBay, 2023)

      • Complete 4-coin set, each with certified DDR – routinely fetches $325-$400.

Frequently asked questions

Are 2009 pennies copper or zinc?
Business-strike 2009 cents are the usual copper-plated zinc alloy (2.5 g), but the S-mint proofs and the uncirculated Mint-set satin coins were struck in the pre-1982 “bronze” alloy (95 % copper, 3.11 g). Errors occur on both compositions. PCGS

Which 2009 penny error is worth the most?
So far the top price belongs to a Birthplace MS67+RD that hammered for $646 at Heritage in 2015, primarily for condition rather than variety PCGS. Among doubled dies, the P-mint FS-801 extra-thumb has generated the highest certified-grade premiums.

How many extra-thumb varieties exist?
Depending on the counting method, 40-60 separate listings (WDDR-, CONECA DDR-, FS- numbers) show extra digits on the Formative Years reverse; new dies are still being reported.

Do I have to pay tax when I sell?
Modern cents are not exempt from capital-gains tax; consult a tax professional if profits exceed hobby limits.
