Historically, vaults were built in the basements of banks where the ceilings were vaulted, hence the name. During its beginnings, vault technology evolved into an arms race with bank robbers. Manufacturers came up with innovative solutions to prevent them from doing so. Obverse depicts the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the inscriptions "QUEEN ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and "5 DOLLARS".
Reverse features a circular vault door with a combination lock and a rotary handle. Around the rim are long and short lines resembling a mechanical combination lock.
