The COVID-19 Pandemic significantly limited the capacity of the West Point Mint branch in 2021. Silver Eagles were still in high demand though, so the U.S. Mint engaged the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints in order to produce more Silver Eagles. The San Francisco Mint began minting business strike Silver Eagles to take over some of the demand, which is remarkable since it usually only strikes Proof Silver Eagles in the past. Only around 1 million were minted in San Francisco, which is a substantial decrease compared to the tens of millions minted each year at West Point!
Each 2021 (S) T1 Emergency Production Silver Eagle has a pristine MS70 grade from NGC and is marked as one of the few coins struck at the San Francisco Mint by putting a (S) on the label.
