2008-W $50 Burnished American Gold Buffalo Coin

The 2008-W 1 oz Burnished Gold Buffalo coin was the first time the U.S. Mint offered an uncirculated, burnished in its history. These uncirculated, burnished versions feature the W mint mark on the obverse of the coin. The 2008-W $50 Burnished Gold Buffalo had a mintage of just 9,074 coins. While it does have a tiny mintage, it can be found at a smaller premium than some of the other coins in the series. 

 

History of the 2008-W $50 Burnished Gold Buffalo Coin

The 2008-W 1 oz Burnished Gold Buffalo can be found in a perfect Mint State 70 grade. The Gold Buffalo coin saw a release of many different denominations as well as burnished, uncirculated, and Proof coins. The obverse of the coin depicts a Native American chief designed by James Earle Fraser. He modified this design based on the beloved designs of the Type 1 Indian Head Nickel. The ‘W’ mint mark is also found on the obverse. The reverse of the coin features a fully-drawn bison standing on a mound. Burnished coins typically have a more matte look compared to the satiny finish of regular strike coins.

The 2008-W $50 Buffalo Gold coin value reaches upwards of just under $7,000 for the highest Mint State grades available and documented. With such a small mintage, it could be difficult to find these higher grades, so carefully searching will be worthwhile.
