History of the 2008-W $50 Gold Buffalo Coin
The 2008-W 1 oz Gold Buffalo coin features the ‘W’ mint mark on the obverse of the coin. This is a unique coin that would add value to a collection due to its low mintage. James Earle Fraser designed the beloved Buffalo Gold coin, and is a modified version of the Type 1 Indian Head Nickel. This 24 karat gold bullion coin features a profile of a Native American chief on the obverse of the coin, and a full depiction of a bison on a mound on the reverse. A bison was often mistaken and referred to as a buffalo, hence the name of the coin.
