History of the 2008 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin

The U.S. Mint wanted to capture a more Asian American audience with the 2008 1 oz Gold Buffalo by releasing it in conjunction with the Lunar New Year. While this was a nice marketing strategy, there was no differentiation between the celebration coin and any other 2008 versions. The only difference was the box that it came in, which was a red velvet gift box that was used to entice different nationalities to purchase the Gold Buffalo coins. James Earle Fraser designed this beloved series using a modified version of the Indian Head Nickel (Type 1) design. It didn’t feature a mint mark, which was common with these uncirculated, regular strike coins at the Philadelphia Mint.
