Soter Megas was a notable ruler of the Kushan Empire, reigning approximately between 80 and 90 CE. His title, “Soter Megas,” translates to “Great Savior” in Greek, and this title is prominently featured on his coinage. For centuries he was known as the great nameless king, as most history only referred to him as his title of Soter Megas. Only recently was he identified as Vima Takto, finally giving the great nameless king a name.

During his reign, Vima Takto significantly expanded the Kushan Empire’s territory, extending its influence across northwestern India and Bactria, and even reaching towards China. His era is marked by the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Eastern Han dynasty, as evidenced by Kushan embassies sent to the Han court.

The coins from his reign are particularly distinctive. They often depict his bust adorned with a Greek royal headband and bear the title “Basileu Basileuon Soter Megas,” which means “King of Kings, Great Savior”. These coins were crucial in identifying him, especially after the discovery of the Rabatak inscription, which linked his name to the title on the coins.
